Who Invented Forest School?

Today, I’m going to be looking at who invented Forest School?
On the surface
Now, if invented is the right word then it was Bridgewater College, at least in the UK.
What I want to get across to you is that the term Forest School is a brand label for a special way of learning, that goes much further back than Bridgewater College.
But when we dig deeper…
We’re talking about its roots going back to the earliest child development theorists; such as Froebel, Montessori and Piaget and their work that surrounds the impact nature upon the learning and development of young children.
Now, the culture that has made learning in the outdoors so popular and really attractive due to its associated benefits that children can gain from this way of learning is Scandinavia.
It’s actually where a team from Bridgewater College headed to, to gain an insight into the ethos and style of learning in the outdoors that they’d heard about, that really permeates the Scandinavian culture.
The Inspiration That Set It All In Motion
The colleges observational trip there also inspired the need for a Leading figure to support learning as in Scandinavia a single teacher, known as a pedagogue looks after all proceedings, which is quite interesting.
In the context of Forest School, the teacher or pedagogue is known as the Forest School leader.
